Epiretinal membrane is a thin avascular membrane that forms on the inner surface of the retina.
Epiretinal membranes can be associated with various eye conditions such as posterior vitreous detachments, retinal breaks or detachments, inflammatory conditions and hemorrhages in the vitreous.
However, most of them are not associated with any underlying conditions and are called idiopathic.
Symptoms caused by epiretinal membranes are vision distortion and wavy lines.
Its treatment is surgical and is performed with vitrectomy and peeling of the membrane. Surgery is carried out under local or general anesthesia. Vision rehabilitation can take up to 6-12 months.
